Mental Health Break: Video

November 10, 2012

Footage from a 1922 dog show in Amsterdam showing many different breeds.  The video is in black and white with Dutch text identifying the breeds.  It’s 12 minutes long and there is no audio.  Enjoy!

That “Fransche Herdershond” (3:53) looks like a hella fun guy.

Snapping fingers must have been the precursor to the clicker? Thanks for the enjoyable break.

I’m wondering what that Fransche Herdershond would be called in English, and is that type of dog still around? And I really want one of the Matin Belgische trekhond. It looked just like a Rottweiler, but in other colors than black and tan, which would make it easier in interactions with silly people who think Rotties are scary.

Dang, I just spent time looking and found it was called the Belgian Mastiff, used as a drover and carting dog, but the breed disappeared after WW2. That is a real shame.

I was impressed to see that the Ruwharige Belgische Herdershond back then is a lovely example of an old-style Laekenois Belgian Shepherd, and the Hollandsche Herdershond shows us what an original Dutch Shepherd looked like.

Thanks, Shirley, that was really nice, and even educational!

Fascinating how both the boston terrier and the boxer appear in those days. Very different now.
